Tennessee politics behind the scenes
So they want it more like WIC.... have you ever been stuck in line after someone who was recieving WIC. (No you can't get the milk with the white top it has to be the red. Or that's the wrong brand of peanut butter/cheese) Really, such a great idea . I find it funny how you republicans complain about how "Fat butt Michelle Obama" needs to shut up about telling people to eat healthier but now you are going to regulate purchases based on nutrition content. Please, what will be available is going to be dictated by the brands, same content different label. Only one reason one is picked over the other.
I would happily wait in line the extra 2 minutes.
Its a lot more than two minutes. Especially if we are talking food stamps which involve much more food than the jar of peanut butter and bag of beans on WIC. Your nonchalant attitude tells me how ignorant you really are in regards to how this actually works.
Sounds good in theory but in practice?$132.20 per person per month./30 days = $4.41 a dayso.... when you are trying to stretch your stamps what do you buy to eat for the DAY!?! I challenge you, go to the store and see how you will feed yourself for $4.41 a day and take a long hard look at what is cheap enough for you to afford.
It's not about the amount. It's about how its spent.
Junk food is infinitely cheaper than healthy food. If you only have $4.41 for the day, are you going to go for the 20-calorie apples or the 150-calorie Little Debbie Cakes? Keep in mind that the cakes are cheaper.
I beg to differ. Processed junk food is much more expensive. And a lack of calories is not an issue for most of the poor. Most of the time it is obesity. And an apple has about 100-150 calories.
Who does your shopping? I assure you a bag of chips is a buck, a bag of grapes 4-5. Processed junk food is much cheaper and keeps longer for those without reliable transportation.
A small bag of chips may be a buck but I can get an entire head of lettuce for that same buck. Or I could get a few apples or peaches or a lot of other fruits or veggies. And pound for pound its not even close. A frozen pizza is 4-5 bucks and one meal for really one two two people at best. That same 4-5 bucks I can make 3 healthy meals for those same people. It may take me more time but if I'm unemployed I would have time.
Lettuce is 94.9% water. Hardly filling.
By your theory of thought calories and life of the product is all that counts. OK then I guess you think all we need to do Is give every family a 5 pound bag of sugar to eat. I mean it keeps and is filling right?
But thats just it- you're not unemployed. Your working your ass off and still cant make ends meet because your employer is allowed to work you 39, pay you diddly squat and then fire at will without cause. How long will those veggies keep? When will you cook them, hell how would you even get them home without transpo. Car insurance and gas arent acceptable expenses.
But that is it. 39 hours is not "working your ass off" its a part time job (there are a lot more of those now thanks to Obamacare has made businesses cut their hours) if you want out of poverty its simple. It's not easy, but it is simple. I have known many people from all walks of life and situation do it. Most work 60 hours a week and up for a year or two. And climb the ladder. I have known people who couldn't speak English and had kids climb out of poverty in a few years and now are doing quite well. Some worked 30 hours in 2 days. Now they have crews of employees that work for them and work very little and eat quite well. Liberals all seem to want everyone to start half way up the ladder without ever doing any work. They want no one to ever suffer for their own personal bad life decisions. They don't want it to happen so bad they will punish those who work harder and make good choices just so no one feels bad about not having the same success as those who did work. It's a system that promotes failure and lack of effort.
And this is America. There is no slavery. If you don't like a job you can quit. The reason you are at the bottom rung is for a reason. It is not permanent unless you chose to make it so. Even McDonalds will promote you in time to a better pay and job if you have half a brain in your head and are willing to work. If they aren't then you should quit or move to a job that will. Life is full of choices if you chose to drop out of school, get pregnant, do drugs, party all night, get busted for criminal activity you are making a choice. Those bad choices come with consequences. They are not permanent but they all will make your road longer and harder. Trying to deny these facts by punishing those people who do not do these things or "wealth redistribution" will not change these facts.
And as for being fired without cause its B.S. I know employers. They will do about anything to keep a quality employee. What they are getting are people who refuse to get off drugs long enough to pass a drug test, people who won't or don't show up to work consistently. And on and on. I can get anyone in Knoxville a full time job with benefits and overtime in 48 hours if they have a HS diploma and can pass.a drug test.
The job market is not good in many places. I looked for a job in London for six months and got nowhere. And there are many reasons why someone would end up low on the ladder for no fault of their own.My mum pulled me out of school for a good year and a half when I was 15, for example. That certainly messed with things. She's still paranoid and trying to pull me out of school now.
Well that's not legal here in the states. And even if it was I know someone could still make it.
Canada has a far better education system than the United States by nearly any metric.
What I am saying is that maybe you dont know what is best for an individual family. Maybe what I am saying senator is that some people need quick and cheap. One I am saying it that a pizza can be dinner a few peaches is not. Yes, when you have no way back to the store, you make your food last. Read up on Maslow
I forgot where Maslow talked about government providing all your wants and needs being the motivating factor to raise your self up. As I recall he said people want things and this want drives them to do what is needed to achieve those needs. You may be right in that I don't know what a a family in poverty needs to do to make the government provide for all their wants and needs for the rest of their life without any effort or sacrifice. I only know how to make it so they don't have to live off the government for their entire life. If you want to live out in the country and not have a car and think government is some sort of free chauffeur service then again, your right I don't know how to make that work. By golly I don't know how people survived without McDonnalds, toaster treats, ring dings and Ho hos back in the 1920s before refrigeration. It must have been impossible I know, they all ate pure sugar right from the bag right?
Looks like you should read a little more about Maslow. Also you want lower healthcare quit slave driving people have families they would actually like to see. We cant all go on a leisurely jet ski with our moms- surprised to see you actually had one- you sure don't act like it.
Also, these days you can't grow a garden, most landlords wont allow it. Maybe you should look into doing something about that. Or like, the ability to keep chickens.
Weill if a garden or chickens are so important to you then you should check with your landlord previous to signing the lease.
Who said the jet ski was mine? If you don't like your family I'm sorry.
Landlord was in jail when moved in, and if you are working 60 hours (which is what you think is sufficient) then when do you have time for family
Did you read your lease? Who was your landlords representative. You could have asked them. 60 hours is 10 hour days 7 to 5 for most people. Still plenty of time for family if they are important to you. When you make something it frees up more time then it takes to start off. I admit I worked many long days (and nights) to get out of min wage type jobs. Now I have tons of time to do what I want because of that sacrifice.
Again landlord in jail, bought the property rent the land. There was no lease. He is the local police departments "best inmate" (his words, yes this is a true story) so they let him do what he wants including be delinquent on taxes and drive on multiple DUI's. Say there's something useful you could do, want to put forth a bill about DUIs? Three and done, I read about a guy the other day 17 DUI's here in TN
What county do you live in. If there is no lease then you may still be covered by the landlord code. You can also move because there is no lease. As for the DUI we passed mandatory interlock last year for DUI offenders and I think after 3rd of fence its a year in jail so I doubt he has 17.
http://www.johnsoncitypress.com/article/99006 Jail didnt work for this guy I was wrong it was not 17 it was 13. So I slightly exaggerated.
Well it said he did 4 years last time. I bet will be in longer this next time.
Does that mean it will be somehow more effective than before? Just safer to drive while he is still there.
The Panera CEO is trying to live off of foodstamps and is giving a day-by-day account. I highly suggest you read this.http://www.linkedin.com/today/post/article/20130913215601-25745675-snap-challenge-day-1-prepping-for-the-challenge?trk=tod-home-art-list-large_0
Yea right. I have offered to take the challenge before and live off the same amount as what government offered. I could do it quite easy even without my other incomes. I even challenged my local paper to do it for charity (the metro pulse) guess who chickened out? It wasn't me. The number of services govt provides is outrageous. As far as some CEO I doubt he is doing it for anything other then lefty publicity. Is he going to double his employees pay when he is done to show "he learned his lesson"? I doubt it. Here are the facts. In the 50s 98 % of men were working or looking for work. Now its almost half of that. Work has been stigmatized as bad. If you own a business your evil and greedy repressing anyone that works for you. If you make it, you must have cheated someone. If your job isn't glamorous you are repressed and should quit and live off government until the perfect job comes along. If that fails, go for disability and let the government pay for you because you earned it and deserve it. I not that get government services as long as you can. It beats working. Who pays for it all? Those that will work. http://www.cato.org/publications/commentary/when-welfare-pays-better-work
Oh, I forgot to add in, if you go in debt for things you legitimately spent money on, just claim bankruptcy and stic it to all those people who lent you money. I mean they have so much they lent it to you to start with right?
